Why can’t antibiotics work on viruses?

Viruses insert their genetic material into a human cell’s DNA in order to reproduce. Antibiotics cannot kill viruses because bacteria and viruses have different mechanisms and machinery to survive and replicate. The antibiotic has no target to attack in a virus.

How do anti-viral drugs work?

Most anti-viral drugs target specific mechanisms unique for that virus. Also, unlike most antibiotics, anti-viral drugs do not destroy their target pathogen, instead they inhibit their development. For Example, with respect to Influenza “The Flu”, antivirals such as Tamiflu, interfere with an important enzyme of the influenza virus, called neuraminidase

What is Viral Load?

This is something commonly measured with HIV and Hepatitis C. With respect to HIV, a viral load of 10,000 would be considered low, and 100,000 would be considered high. Measuring these levels allows us to gauge how well anti-viral agents / drugs are working in certain individuals. With Respect to the Coronavirus, the tests being performed currently are not giving a specific quantitative value with respect to viral load, however, just give a qualitative result of positive or negative based upon the presence or absence of antibodies / antigens. Once specific anti-viral drugs are considered effective against coronavirus , and others are developed, tests will be released to measure viral loads, and a vaccine will keep those viral load numbers to a minimum.
